To make a selection in your image, you can use the select subject tool (1), any of the marquee or lasso tools (2), and the object selection, quick selection, or the magic wand tool (3). The reality is that in the last 10 years Adobe has added perhaps 4 worthwhile features to Ai; the blob brush, width tool, artboards and the shape builder.
